Where did the idea originate that the tariffs are permeant? Trump is looking for balanced trade, reciprocal trade, a fair shake for US products to be sold abroad. Trump is negotiating, he wrote a book on negotiating called: "The Art of the Deal."
Negotiation is always what Trump does. There are many countries now looking to come here to sit down with him and talk it out, where as before we have been ignored. We in the US have always paid more than other countries, and we continue to be robbed by giving money to useless scams like NATO, Climate Change, and Neocon nonsense. If people will just sit tight, this will work out to our advantage. The man has only been in there for 3 months.
Your analysis while not wrong on its face entirely misses the overarching goal of the tariffs.
Yes, the tarrif rates announced are a) far too high and b) calculated via an absurd method, and c) irrelevant. The rates are just Trump’s usual way of getting his negotiating partners to accept his frame by metaphorically slapping him in the face. It’s the start of negotiations, nothing more. And the smarter countries understand this; they are either caving very publicly or refraining from retaliating, because they know US tariffs are a) necessary, b) justified, and c) long overdue.
Thanks for your take, Scott. First off, I agree—it could very well be a negotiating tactic. I’ve said as much before. In fact, as I noted in the P.S., I believe the tariffs are just the opening act in Trump's broader economic strategy.
That said, two things.
One, it hasn’t worked so far. China—the main target—just hit back with a 34% blanket tariff. A handful of smaller countries caving doesn’t mean much if the red dragon can’t be tamed.
Two, why base the entire thing on a formula that’s not only BS on its face, but also contains an actual (basic) error? The AEI article I linked to explains this eloquently—worth a read if you get a chance. IMO, it would’ve looked 10 times better if they’d picked the tariff %'s by flipping a coin.
I get the bigger picture you’re pointing to. But I can't overlook the sloppy execution... esp. when the stakes are this high.
I know, it’s difficult to swallow. But again, the tariffs embody an opening move to a game that not only must be played, but is on a clock. This move has already precipitated more positive results than anticipated, that otherwise may have consumed more time than our country can afford. China understands the dynamics and won’t capitulate overnight, but now they are playing the game, and that is precisely by design.
Including all bouncing on the current trumpoline, or the previous biden-of-thieves, or-or-or all the way back to the groundhog day future.
The former couldn't do any of this degradation without alllll the artists formerly known (in their own minds or other previous lives that never were) as princes execution-help.
Latter-former is the meaning & the method of getting the gov-age you deserve ... sir-yes-sir I'm your fatted goose liver pate huckleberry!

Well, all I can say is… let’s just see what happens.
Anathema-ticians - not math - are the problem.

Thanks, Frank—honestly, that’s probably the biggest compliment a reader can give me. Appreciate it.
